The only two flowering plants native to the Antarctic continent are both restricted to the Antarctic Peninsula. The grass Deschampsia antarctica may develop into swards covering several to tens of square metres (left), while the pearlwort Colobanthus quitensis more typically is encountered as individual cushions (right) (photos P. Convey).
